Insurance cover

If you are covered by medical insurance, please verify the details with your insurer prior to visiting the consultant or hospital and obtain a pre-authorisation or claim number where possible.

Please ensure you take with you the insurance company name, address, policy number and authorisation details.

Please note that pre-authorisation does not guarantee payment by the insurer, it only provides authority for you to see the consultant or hospital by the insurer. If in doubt speak to your insurer about your financial cover. Neither the consultant or hospital have any influence over your insurance policy or the insurer.

Understanding your insurance cover

You may have limits on your policy, or an excess which you need to check first. It’s important that you confirm cover before you commit yourself to treatment. Full insurance details must be given to the consultant as well as the hospital at, or before treatment for direct settlement. The consultant and the hospital can invoice your insurance company or sponsor directly, it is your responsibility to ensure that claims are processed promptly. Should insurers, sponsors or guarantors decline or delay payment, you will be invoiced for immediate settlement. In addition, please also note that almost all insurers exclude certain items from cover, for example, any Take Home Drugs which you may be prescribed. The consultant or hospital may charge you personally for such items.
